Getting into medical school has become increasingly difficult as younger generations become more eager to pursue a career in medicine. Finding a mentor is especially challenging now that the pandemic has forced many students online. Kyle Langston, a medical student at UTSW, has created a solution to this problem.
“The Survival Guide is an all-encompassing work of the best advice any pre-med student should take to heart and begin implementing from the first day of their freshman year. After my first time reading through, I felt like I finally gained practical advice for navigating classes, student organizations, leadership roles, and the many other aspects of coming to college. The best advice I initially took was to create a pre-med journal to log every meaningful experience. This alleviated so much stress when I was completing applications for summer programs and trying to reflect on past experiences. Whenever I feel burnt out or discouraged, I read the Survival Guide and am instantly motivated to keep growing as a student and person. The Survival Guide put my entire undergraduate journey into a broader perspective and reminded me that someone else has experienced what I’m going through and been successful. The most impactful parts of The Survival Guide to me were the “Personal Responsibility” and “How to Be a Good Leader” sections. These sections were wake-up calls as a pre-med while also giving practical steps to improve. Kyle motivated me to make my pre-med journey unique and have the courage to start an organization that was not available on Baylor’s campus. Without his genuine honesty and encouragement to dedicate time to what I truly wanted to do and not what I thought I should do as a pre-med, I would not have grown into the student that I am today.”

“Whenever I came to college, I was not a fantastic student. I lacked drive, discipline, and most importantly, I had no idea what I needed to do to accomplish my goal of being accepted into medical school. I have no familial ties to medicine, so the pre-medical journey for me was an entirely foreign experience that I was left to navigate all on my own. While I was lucky enough to have my mentor, Kyle, be with me for the first two years of my undergraduate career, once he left for medical school I did not have the same level of access to his advice, knowledge, and experience as I was used to. Then came this book. It allowed me to access knowledge and learn from him whenever I wanted and needed, and I could read the sections that applied to me and my part of my journey. The information and advice was honest, helpful, and only had my best interest in mind. Without Kyle and his advice, my undergraduate journey would not have been as successful and transformative, I would not be applying and interviewing at medical schools, and I would not be the same student, leader, and mentor that I am today.”
